A Sabbatical Prayer

Guide us, Lord, as we all journey through the months ahead together.
Help us to walk trustingly in faith with our parish family and to serve one another humbly.
May we always be aware of your presence and direction in all we do.
Be with Kristin+, Zachary, and Jasper and give them joy and contentment as they travel, and return them safely to us. Amen.

Vestry

It’s not easy to run a business. It takes a lot of time, expertise, and attention to detail. We’d like to thank Cheryl Windsor, Chris Henyon, and Deb Schaeffer – these three stepped up and volunteered to run our thrift shop ever since our previous thrift shop manager, Sandy Baker, became too ill to work. They volunteered and ran it successfully for a mighty long run. Even now, they’re guiding the newly-hired thrift shop manager, Lori Howes.  So thanks Cheryl, Chris and Deb for all your work, we appreciate it!

It takes a lot of volunteers to keep our parish running. Thank-you to everyone that’s helping out in so many ways. Our largest fund-raiser of the year, the basket raffle, is almost complete. This Saturday baskets will be displayed in downtown Mount Airy. Thanks to everyone that’s helping out with this big job.

Kristin’s sabbatical will end as she returns October 9th – please look for invitations to celebrate her return and respond when you receive them.

This month the vestry signed off on the official audit and our Treasurer Natalie DelRegno submitted the letters to our diocese.

Jim Bullington, our warden responsible for building and grounds, is pursuing locksmiths to fix the slightly wonky main doors to our church and nursery school. We’ll get there soon.

Arborists at Bartlett began treatments on the ailing honey locust tree in our memorial garden.

The vestry approved minor changes to the Personnel Handbook for our employees.

Thrift Shop

Welcome to our new store manager, Lori Howes.  Lori resides in Sykesville and comes to us with valuable experience in retail merchandising. Lori is applying her skills and making many visual display improvements, and a new display unit for our infant onesies is on its way!

As usual, tons of wonderful donations are coming in daily from our community for which we are very thankful.

Oktoberfest will take place in Downtown Mt. Airy this Saturday.  The church Basket Raffle will be displayed in front of the shop.  Please stop in and say hello after you purchase your raffle tickets.  Main Street will be closed to traffic so remember to take the “back way” to the town parking lot.

Speaking of parking lots, paving will begin on our parking on on Friday, September 24th and continue through Tuesday, September 27th.

From the A is for Africa July/August newsletter:

St. James Episcopal Church Mite Box Collection … A Decade of Support
The tradition of Mite Boxes goes back about 1,000 years. The collection of coins for helping the poor even has biblical references. For more than 10 years the children of St James Sunday School have made their own mite boxes and collected money during Lent.  A is for Africa was honored at a presentation in July to receive the children’s donations this year and their collections were matched by the Parish Council, for a total of $1950! Thank you, St James Episcopal!
