A Sabbatical Prayer

Guide us, Lord, as we all journey through the months ahead together.
Help us to walk trustingly in faith with our parish family and to serve one another humbly.
May we always be aware of your presence and direction in all we do.
Be with Kristin+, Zachary, and Jasper and give them joy and contentment as they travel, and return them safely to us. Amen.

Nursery School

St. James’ Nursery School is happy to welcome returning students and families, new staff and new families back to school! It’s always so nice to hear the buzz of children’s laughter and excitement after having quiet classrooms all summer. September has been a busy month so far! We started the school year off with themes of Back to School and All About Me. Children have been learning to identify parts of the body and what makes us special and unique. They have been telling us all about their families and pets in many creative ways. The rest of the month will be spent learning about the 5 Senses and Apples!

We will also have a visit from the CCPL Book Mobile and the beloved, Corky, the penguin puppet. He is always dressed and ready to read for every theme! The children will also enjoy a new program this year, Creative Drama. This is a hands-on, drama themed way to help children learn social and emotional skills in a fun way.

We are looking for someone to fill an aide position in our Pre-K 4’s Green Room, Monday-Friday from 8:45-3:15. We are also looking for someone to fill the teacher position in our 2’s Blue Room, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings from 8:45-11:45. If you or someone you know is interested in either position, please contact Amanda at school@stjamesmtairy.org or 301-829-0014.

Fall Blood Drive

FACTS ABOUT BLOOD NEEDS

  • Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and or platelets.
  • Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U. S.
  • Nearly 5,000 units of platelets and 6.500 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
  • Nearly 16 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
  • Sickle cell disease affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the U.S. About 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year. Sickle cell patients can require blood transfusions throughout their lives.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 units.
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
  • Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; they can only come from volunteer donors.
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.
  • One donation can help save more than one life.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.8 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2020. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

As many of your know, my mother has been in the hospital several times in the last few months. On one of those occasions she was in need of blood. Due to blood shortages, protocol for when to administer has been narrowed. It’s no longer enough for your hemoglobin levels to be below range – your levels must be severely below range. She was given one unit which brought her just above the magic severe number but nowhere near normal. We had to wait for her to drop below again to receive a second unit.  In that in- between state a person is left vulnerable to cardiac, pulmonary, and other consequences. Luckily, with medications the source of bleeding resolved. I never thought I would hear my loved one couldn’t get the blood they needed because of shortages.

My family and I are forever grateful to those who are able to donate and  would like to ask all able people to make an appointment and give this lifegiving resource.
