From the Rector – Why Am I A Christian?

On Sunday, April 7th The Rt. Rev. Eugene Sutton will be visiting St. James’.  There will be one service at 10:30 am at which Bishop Sutton will Preside and Preach, followed by a festive coffee hour.  In addition, he will be leading a Sunday Forum at 9:30 am on the topic “Why am I a Christian?”

Diocesan Visitations are always special days.  Due to the number of parishes in the diocese, we usually receive a visit from a Bishop or the Canon to the Ordinary about every 12-16 months.  Bishop Sutton was last with us for the Celebration of New Ministry in 2015; Canon Slater was with us in 2016, and Bishop Knudsen was with us 2017.  It will be a joy (Lent notwithstanding) to welcome Bishop Sutton back to St. James’.

I hope you will be able to attend the Bishop’s forum.  He has extended a special invitation to our Middle and High School Youth to come.  Bishop Sutton will share some of his own faith journey, as well as what makes being an Episcopalian special – and invite us all into reflecting on our faith identity.  As his visit will be on the 5th Sunday of Lent – the final Sunday before Palm Sunday and Holy Week – the topic will provide for a meaningful capstone to our Lenten journey.

Mark your calendars now and plan to share our St. James’ hospitality with our Bishop!

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+

Nursery School

Book Fair
Saint James’ Nursery School hosts a Scholastic book fair each year.  The fair is coming right up!   Next Wednesday and Thursday, March 27 & 28 each class will visit the fair and have an opportunity to purchase books.  Scholastic has been offering books to students for 30 years. That’s a long time but the Saint James’ Nursery School has been around even longer.  Take a guess how many years we’ve been open.

Science Technology Engineering Art and Math Night
Saint James’ Nursery School has scheduled a STEAM Family night Wednesday, April 10th for our Preschool 3 year old and Pre-Kindergarten 4 year old families.  The teachers will be leading small group experiences in science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Summer Session Openings
Saint James’ Nursery School will offer a summer program for three weeks, June 10-28, similar to what we did last year. Patti Hill will be working as the lead teacher and coordinator for the program. Nikki Davis and Gaby D’Amborozio will be splitting the weeks, working as the classroom aides.  Please contact Pat Castle or Sharon Hansen if you have a student that might be interested in participating – 301-829-0014, registration is now open.

Altar Flower Ministry

Easter Season is just around the corner and soon we will be filling the sanctuary with beautiful flowers to celebrate The Resurrection of Our Lord.  This Sunday you will begin seeing the form for Easter Flower and Music Memorials and Thanksgivings.  Your memorials for your loved-ones and your thanksgivings will be published in the Easter Day bulletin.

For your convenience, you will find additional forms and envelopes in the narthex.  Just complete the form, make checks payable to St. James’ indicating “Easter Flowers/Music”, then drop in the collection plate or leave in the parish office.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Office Schedule for the week of March 24.
Monday – Thursday 10-4.

Walk for El Hogar

Good morning, friends,

If any are interested in service hours or simply in volunteering or participating in a great event, please consider participating or volunteering on Sunday afternoon, March 24 at the Walk for El Hogar.

The walk begins at 1 pm, volunteers can come before then to get ready. It’s a 5 mile walk to support children ages 5-18 in Honduras who attend on of El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza, which serves poor and abandoned children. The goal of the education at El Hogar is raising up an educated and productive middle class within Honduras, a country that suffers from cycles of government corruption and poverty.

Many members of the larger diocesan community (and St. Andrew’s, Glenwood) have traveled to Tegucigalpa to witness El Hogar’s solidarity with children in deep need. These youth and adult service team participants have learned firsthand about poverty, government policies, education, and a faithful response to systemic injustice.

(If you know someone interested in traveling to Honduras this summer (July 13-20, $1500-1700) – please put them in touch with the St. Andrew’s, Glenwood parish office for a complete trip packet: 410-489-4035 – must be a high school freshman or older, or a parent/guardian must accompany a younger youth.)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Peace/Paz,

The Rev. Dina van Klaveren
