From the Rector – Are You A Match?

As many of you know, our former Parish Administrator Christine Burnett was diagnosed with leukemia at the end of January this year.  She began treatment immediately with the hope of a bone marrow transplant down the line.  Her son was initially identified as a match and she was scheduled for the transplant next week.  Last week further tests revealed compatibility issues, and so the transplant was cancelled.  She will begin another round of chemotherapy next week, but a transplant is still her best possibility for a cure.

I bid your prayers for Christine.  Prayers for strength, for healing, for comfort.  Cards and email notes to lift her spirit would also be appreciated.  (contact the office if you need contact information)

If you are between the ages of 18 to 44, I also ask you to consider registering to be a possible match for a patient in need of a bone marrow transplant.  You can find out more about what this means and how to register here. Registering does not mean you are committing to be a donor, but that you would consider doing so if a match is found.  It’s a simple cheek swab process, and one that could potentially save a life.

If other ways to support Christine in the future are identified we will share those, but in the meantime please pray and act as you feel called.

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+

Where in the Church is Flat St. James?

This summer we’re going to have some fun here at church with Flat St. James!  Every Sunday, this Flat St. James (dressed in a red robe with a blue belt) will hide around the church – waiting to be found by curious folks, be they little or big.  Every Sunday you find him, you can see Kristin+ (or visiting clergy) to receive a stamp for your Where’s Flat St. James? passport.  How many stamps will you collect this summer?!

Also – a shout-out to parishioner Ashley Conlon whose idea inspired this!

Altar Flower Ministry

May showers bring June flowers! While many blooms were washed away last month, summer is trying its best to get off to a great start. The Flower Guild enjoys using seasonal blossoms at the altar each week. Depending on the type of flower you are cutting, there are ways to “condition” your stem. Properly conditioned flowers last longer in arrangements. Many woody type stems like to be split to take up more water. Tender perennials do best when cut early in the morning or late evening. Look for blooms to be just-forming. Carrying a bucket of water with you through the garden will make your cut stems very happy. If your garden is filling up with color, consider joining us. We are in search of creative gardeners or first time designers willing to learn the art of floral design. Many supplies are stored at the church or can be available upon request. You just need some color! Contact Ashley Conlon via email at ashleyconlon345@gmail.com for more ministry information.

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Take Flat St. James with you wherever you go this summer!
This week, James spent Father’s Day with the Dulanys for an hike on the beginners walking path between Mt. Airy and New Market on Rt.144.

Our little guy’s first stop this year was at Rocky Gap State Park with his friends Max, Sharon and Ernie.

Pick up supplies to make your own Flat St. James, and instruction sheets for taking and sharing summer pictures with him.  We can’t wait to see what our St. James’ community is up to over the summer!

Here’s our map so far.  It’s interactive so click on the markers.
