Episcopal 101: Getting to know the Church again for the first time

Dear St. James’ Parish Family,
Alleluia! Christ is risen! We are now in Eastertide, the great 50 days in which the Church celebrates the resurrection (notice it’s longer than the puny 40 days of Lent!). In Lent, we gathered on Monday nights to explore different ways of praying and what it means to create a life of prayer. In Eastertide, you are invited to join in a series I’m calling Episcopal 101: Getting to know the Church again for the first time. Not the most creative title, but it’s descriptive!
These sessions are a great way to learn more about the Episcopal Church and our tradition whether you are a cradle Episcopalian, you’ve just found your way here, or you are somewhere in between, this course will cover everything from church history and theology, to polity and liturgy – and lots more. Do you have burning questions about why we do things the way we do, or what something means when we do it in worship? Bring those questions – I love to play stump the priest! Each session itself is stand alone, but the series as whole does build upon earlier discussions; come to as many as you can! We will gather after the 10:30 am service, location TBD depending on how many people we have.

4/10 Session One: Community on the Hill: Our Parish and Our Church
4/17 The Rev. Scott Slater, Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Maryland will host a Q&A about diocesan/denominational governance (he’s a great person to play “stump the priest” with too!)
4/24 Session Two: Gathering and Creating Meaning: The Episcopal Tradition
5/1 Session Three: The Word Spoken: Scripture and Sermons
5/8 Session Four: We Believe…? Creeds and Prayers
5/15 Session Five: Bread and Wine, Time and Treasure ~ Into the World

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+
