Our……. “Journey to Bethlehem”

Since we are unable to have our yearly indoor Christmas pageant due to COVID guidelines, we are hoping you will participate in our new outdoor Journey to Bethlehem:  a drive-thru Christmas pageant!  All parish members are invited to take part in this adventure (Sunday School students, family members, individuals).

The pageant will be held on Sunday, December 20th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the front entrance of St. James’.  Participants will be assigned to various stations around the circle of the church entrance.  The stations will include travelers to Bethlehem, shepherds in the fields, families at the inn, Mary and Joseph, angels, animals and The Three Kings.  There will be no speaking parts but hand held signs will be provided as well as costumes (or you may wish to be creative and design your own costumes!).

We are working hard to make this first-time experience a meaningful adventure for those who participate and for the visitors who drive through the circle to follow our Journey to Bethlehem.  Can we count on you to volunteer as a family or individual?

St. Nicholas Zoom Story Time THIS SATURDAY!

To celebrate the Feast Day of St. Nicholas Bishop of Myra (December 6), you’re invited to a Zoom story time on the eve of his special day. Gather on Zoom at 7:00 pm this Saturday 12/5 to learn about who St. Nicholas was and to read a few storybooks about his life.

If you were able to pick up an Advent-Christmas-Epiphany Take Home Kits be sure to pull out the materials to help celebrate St. Nicholas, including a coloring sheet, prayer card, instructions for making an origami bishop’s miter, and chocolate coins. Why chocolate coins? One of the best loved St. Nicholas traditions is to leave your shoes out on the eve of his feast day to be filled with chocolate coins and an orange.

All ages are invited – we hope to see everyone there!

Winter Book Discussion Group

Join us for our Winter 2021 book group to discuss the book Born A Crime by Trevor Noah.  Grab a copy and plan to meet on Zoom on Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 pm.  Here’s an overview from the publisher:

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Flower Guild

Each year during the month of December we collect memorials and thanksgivings with donations to help in the purchase of flowers and music.  Even though we will not be together in person a beautiful service with flowers and special music is being prepared which you will be able to view on Christmas Eve.

Since this all has to be done in advance, the poinsettia plants are already in the building and ready for you to purchase for your celebrations at home.  The plants are large and lush containing approximately 15 flowers per pot and will be sold for $28 each.  We have 10 red and 10 pink poinsettias available.  Arrangements can be made for delivery to 21771 or you can pick up at church at various times.  You will be asked to indicate your preference during the sign up process linked below.
