From the Rector – Will You Serve?

There are many great ways to serve at St. James’, both at church and in the wider community.  One way that uniquely combines both is our Thrift Shop.

The Thrift Shop is our oldest continuous Outreach program.  It was founded 51 years ago and has served the Mt. Airy community in various forms ever since.  Through the Thrift Shop we not only serve those who love to be thrifty, we also assist folks referred to us by Mt. Airy Net, and pass on donations to 20+ different non-profit organizations and other downtown businesses.  We employ 5 people, including our Manager, Sandy Baker, and host a rotation of over a dozen volunteers a week, while serving on average 160 customers weekly.  A new part of this Outreach ministry has been the amazing work of the Gobien family in selling donations better suited to online sales on eBay.

It’s an exciting time at the Thrift Shop as we work to position this ministry to best serve our community in the years to come – and we need your help.  We currently have two vacancies on the Thrift Shop Board that need to be filled.  One is a partial term, serving through August 2021, and the other is a nearly full term, serving through August 2022.  The Board meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 4:45-6:00 pm.  It provides leadership oversight and helps cast the vision for this vital ministry.  Are you called to serve?

I invite you pray about whether you are called to serve our community in this way.  If you feel God calling you into this ministry, or if you have questions, please give me a call or talk to me at coffee hour.

Yours in God’s peace, Kristin+

Outreach

The season of Thanksgiving is approaching and, as usual, we like to focus on the giving part.

Firstly, we’ve had a very nice response to our collection for college kids.  So far, we have addresses to send out fourteen packages.  You have until this Sunday to donate items such as granola bars, hot chocolate, crackers, cookies, fruit snacks, hand sanitizer, tissues, disposable razors, tea, coffee, microwaveable popcorn, or pop tarts.  Our college kids are always so appreciative of these care packages as it is a lovely reminder that their church community is always thinking of them.

Next up is our annual food drive to benefit Mt. Airy NET.  This year we will be supporting five families.  Family meals will consist of the following:  turkey, potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, sauerkraut, vegetables, cranberry sauce, rolls, butter, pies and napkins.  You can sign up in the narthex for the items you will be contributing.  Please make sure they are at the church by Thursday, November 21.

Soon Christmas shopping will be in full swing and you will have the opportunity to choose a Pleasant Valley Nursing Home resident or a child in need through Carroll County Social Services, or maybe one of each.  Look for our Angel Tree coming December 1.

Change of Seasons In the rhythms of God’s creation, He placed cues to help us turn to Him and find meaning and purpose in our lives.  Autumn, with its bursting colors of foliage is often a nudge for us to reflect on our lives and make changes that will help us grow.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the beautiful change of season, that encourages and inspires us to look inward and let go of what is necessary to make new life.  Amen.

Join caring folks from across Frederick’s diverse faith communities for an afternoon of learning and conversation. Join Multi-faith Alliance of Climate Stewards, with Hood College, Interfaith Power & Light (MD.DC.NoVA), and Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake to:

  • learn how climate change will impact our region
  • be inspired by work underway in our congregations, local government, businesses, and neighborhoods to reduce our carbon footprint and to work for a just and thriving future in our warming world
  • connect with opportunities to take climate action: at home, in our congregations, and across our community

Our keynote speaker, Maryland’s own climate scientist Dr. Don Boesch, will remind us about the future we face in Frederick and why it matters. Two panel conversations will explore how our communities are responding and can take further action together, and an expo will connect attendees with partners and resources.

We’re looking forward to gathering and learning with you!

* Your payment will support Frederick County congregations coming together to address climate change. Please contact us at 202-709-7641 to discuss our scholarship options if the $15 registration fee would create a financial hardship for you.
