Since
1888, the St. James' parish family has celebrated worship and fellowship in a
beautiful building that sits on a rising knoll, two blocks north of Mt. Airy's
town center. This small
triangle-shaped plot is land locked and allows little possibility for future
expansion of the church building, weekday nursery school program or parking facilities.
In 1997, the Vestry empowered a parish committee (the Land Planning
Committee) to explore available
acreage around Mt. Airy area for possible purchase and to explore new building
requirements and finances. This
committee created the "Share the Vision" study project to ensure the
continued growth of St. James' as a faith community, and to support the various
ministries of the church.

The
work of this committee led to recommendations adopted by the
Vestry. As discussed in the Historical Timeline and Current
Status & Plans section of this document, St. James' has:
-
purchased land
-
had the land annexed
into the town of Mt. Airy
-
developed a two-phase
master plan
-
ran a successful
capital (fund raising) campaign
We are now in the midst of
design and construction of the first phase of the new building.
The goal of St. James' is to celebrate Christmas 2006 in our new home --
thus fulfilling the goals established in "Share the Vision".
