From the Rector – Summer 2018 Service Trip!

I am thrilled to announce our Summer 2018 service trip!  Mark your calendars for the week of July 22-28, 2018.  We will be joining folks from St. Andrew’s, Glenwood for a week of service in Kentucky at St. Timothy’s Outreach Center, which is a part of Episcopal Appalachian Ministries.

While this trip is a special opportunity for our Youth, the great thing is that it is open to anyone in the parish who is high school age and older.  Younger youth can also participate if a parent comes with them.

Everyone interested is invited to attend an information session and slide show
on Sunday, November 5th after the 10:30 am service
when team leaders from St. Andrew’s will come and present.

Information about cost will be handed out at the November 5th meeting.  You can learn more about St. Timothy’s Outreach Center by visiting their website. http://sttimsky.org/

I am excited by this amazing outreach and service opportunity, and especially working with St. Andrew’s which has several years of experience with this ministry.  I hope you will support this important work in whatever way you can!

Yours in God’s peace,
Kristin+

Worship Ministries

Chalice Bearers
Our chalice servers assist our Rector at the altar during communion by offering the cup (the blood of Christ).  This is a very honorable ministry made available to the laity by our Episcopal Church.  This ministry provides an opportunity to serve our church in a rewarding, and humbling manner.

We currently have 20 chalice servers.  Five are youth servers that provide on 4th Sundays at the youth led service.  All serve on a rotating basis according to a monthly schedule.  One server supplies at the 8:30 service, and two supply at the 10:30 service.  Our servers are: Jane Barger, Jim Bullington, Cory DelRegno, Lynda Ellis, Carolyn Etzler, Jon Fader, Paula Morrow, Jeannie Pellicier, Liz Peterson, Aline Sautter, Deb Schaeffer, Steve Stowell, Richard Straus, Maureen Suckling, and Blix Winston.  Our youth servers are Emily Albertson, Kaley Henyon, Kali Nanavaty, Caroline Pellicier, and Lindsay Smith.  Our list has been growing slowly.

Those that are interested in this ministry or have questions should contact Jon Fader 301-703-8787 faderj1@juno.com.  Jon Fader provides training for this ministry.

Lectors
Calling all youth! We are in need of youth lectors to participate during 4th Sunday services by reading the lessons and prayers. You could also pair up with an existing adult lector or your parent/guardian. We only have two youth signed up. The more who sign up, the less times you have to do it. It could be only once per year!

Regular lector rotation: If anyone is interested in joining in the regular lector rotation, please let me know. Thank you!

Crib Nursery
The Crib nursery is so happy to have Katelynn Marshall joining us each week to watch over our little ones.  She is truly an asset!

There is a great need for more volunteers to help Katelynn at each worship service.  Sometimes when there are five Sundays in a month there are only three volunteers; that leaves two weeks unattended. Won’t you please consider volunteering for this worthwhile ministry?

Thank you to all who volunteer on a regular basis!

Nursery School

We thank everyone for their Charleston Wrap fundraiser orders. The money that we make will go directly to this year’s program, purchasing material and equipment for the children’s use. We expect your products to arrive in November. Thank you for helping with our annual fund raiser!

November is a busy month at the Saint James’ Nursery. Mount Airy Police Officer Ginerva will visit our school, talk with the children, and the students will get to see his police car.

Some classes will take trips to Piney Run Nature Center; some will go to the Pine Valley Tree Farm.

The library bookmobile comes to visit, and special Thanksgiving activities are planned before classes close for the holiday. School will be closed November 22 through 24.

Children will continue with the Cuddle Up and Read reading program, thanks to a gift from a family two years ago and a grant through the state of Maryland. Children at the Saint James’ Nursery School that read for at least 15 minutes for 20 days per month will be able to select a new book, compliments of Target. They have to remember to return the calendar showing their progress to the school at the beginning of November, December, January, and February.
